Dybiec Selected for NOAA's Margaret A. Davidson Fellowship

Congratulations to Jake Dybiec on being selected for the 2022-2024 cohort of NOAA's Margaret A. Davidson Graduate Fellowships. As part of the program's second class, Jake joins other graduate students from around the country who will be conducting timely research at National Estuarine Research Reserves. Jake's project will investigate the interactive effects of nutrient enrichment and wave action on marsh resilience at the Weeks Bay NERR.

UA Presentations on Marsh Restoration at JASM 2022

Drs. Julia Cherry, Shelby Rinehart, and Behzad Mortazivi, as well as grad students Emily Fromenthal and Jacob Dybiec, presented talks in a session on coastal wetland restoration and management in the Anthropocene at the Joint Aquatic Sciences Meeting in Grand Rapids, MI. These talks provided overviews of our research on the recovery of carbon storage and nitrogen removal in restored marshes of the MS-AL Gulf Coast, using those data to develop a metric-based model of functional recovery, comparisons of insect communities in created and natural tidal marshes, and the effects of burrowing crabs on marsh sediments.

A new collaborative paper on surface elevation change and accretion at Grand Bay was published today in Wetlands Ecology and Management. As part of the project, we examined patterns of change at five sites spanning the coastal elevation gradient, including low marsh dominated by Spartina alternflora, mid-marsh dominated by Juncus roemerianus, mid-elevation salt pannes, and high marsh dominated by Cladium jamaicense. We then compared them to rates of water-level rise for the region. Results from this study suggest that the Juncus marshes higher in the tidal frame are the most vulnerable to sea-level rise.
